
Dr. Akira Yamauchi and Professor Euan McKay visit the Philippines satellite campus to explore new opportunities for research and academic collaboration with partner institutions
Dr. Akira Yamauchi, Professor and Director of the Asian Satellite Campuses Institute, along with Associate Professor Euan McKay, Lead of the Nagoya University International Strategy Office, visited the Philippines from March 10 to 11, 2025. The purpose of their visit was to strengthen existing partnerships and explore new opportunities for research collaborations and academic exchanges between Nagoya University and leading higher education and research institutions in the Philippines.
On March 10, Professor McKay and Dr. Yamauchi, along with Dr. Mary Jean Bulatao, Director of the Nagoya University Philippines Satellite Campus, met with the officials of the various partner institutions in Los Baños, Laguna. The whole day activity included meetings with Dr. Nathaniel Bantayan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, UPLB; Dr. Glenn Gregorio and Dr. Nur Azura Binti Adam, Director and Deputy Director for Programs, respectively, from the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA); Dr. Anilyn Maningas, Head of Education at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI); Dr. Rico Cabangon, Director of the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI); and Dr. Reynaldo Ebora, Director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). The discussions focused on strategies for promoting and enhancing research collaborations and academic exchanges between Nagoya University and their institutions.

Additionally, Professor McKay and Dr. Yamauchi reconnected with some Nagoya University alumni based in Los Banos to encourage Stage 2 collaborations with their former professors. This group included Dr. Rodmyr Datoon, Director of the Agricultural Systems Institute (ASI), UPLB; Dr. Thelma Saludes, Director of the Philippines Carabao Center at UPLB; Dr. Anniver Ryan Lapuz, Supervising Science Research Specialist at DOST-FPRDI; Dr. Ronilo de Castro, Supervising Science Research Specialist at DOST-PCAARRD; and Ms. Aralyn Quintos Cortiguera, Senior Science Research Specialist, also from DOST-FPRDI.


On March 11, 2025, Professor McKay, Dr. Yamauchi, and Dr. Bulatao once again visited the heads of other partner institutions based in Metro Manila. This last day’s activity included meetings with Director Shigehiro Matsuda of the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC); Dr. Jose Camacho, Jr., Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB); Dr. Leo Cubillan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of the Philippines System; Dr. Roberto M.J. Lara, Secretary of the University of the Philippines and the UP Board of Regents; and Director Corinna Frances O. Cabanilla, Director of the Office of Student Development and Services (OSDS), Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The meeting at the UP-System Office of International Linkages (OIL) was facilitated by Ms. Chynna Riego, Head of External Affairs, and Mr. Guillian Mecate, Head of Program Development and Strategy.
